SHEBOYGAN - The next Point-in-Time Count of the area’s unsheltered population is slated for 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. July 24 and 4-6 a.m. July 25.

Registration is required, and people can select a two-hour shift to search for unsheltered individuals and connect them with local resources.

To register, contact the Lakeshore Community Action Program at 920-803-6991 or complete the volunteer form at https://rb.gy/4ryzyq.

The event helps the Department of Housing and Urban Development determine where housing funding should be allocated.

The count will be done across Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Kewaunee and Door counties.

10th Salvation Ride is July 13 in Sheboygan

The 10th annual Salvation Ride will be July 13. The event supports The Salvation Army’s homeless shelter and food pantry.

Riders of all ages, abilities and e-bikes are welcome to participate in one of five scenic routes — 10, 25, 50, 75 or 100 miles — starting and ending at King Park by Lake Michigan.

Flawless Hoops Carnival coming up July 20

A Flawless Hoops Carnival is set for noon to 5 p.m. July 20 at 814 Superior Ave., outside Seton School. Admission is free.

The event will include bouncy castles, joust bounce, dunk tank, games and prizes. Burgers, brats, popcorn, cotton candy and more will be available.

Tickets are $1 each and will be sold to purchase games and food items. For more, go to flawlesshoops.org.

Cops & Bobbers is July 27

Sheboygan Police Department’s Cops & Bobbers program, where police personnel fish with local youth, will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 27.

People have until July 12 to register online at https://sheboyganpolice.com/community/cops-and-bobbers/.

Participants will meet at the Police Department, 1315 N. 23rd St., the day of the event.

Kohler-Andrae offers Tonic Roots, Ink Fish Printing and more

Kohler-Andrae State Park, 1020 Beach Park Lane in Sheboygan, is offering the following events. A vehicle admission sticker is required. For more details, call 920-451-4080.

  • Discovering Wildflowers: June 26, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Join Master Naturalist Karen Merlau and discover the many wildflowers growing along the Black River Trail. As the seasons change, so do the wildflowers. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Take insect repellant, sunscreen, and field guides or apps. The hike will last at least an hour. An adult must accompany children. Meet at the Black River Trail parking lot P1.
  • Music in the Park: Tonic Roots: June 26, 7-8 p.m. Take the family to the amphitheater and enjoy an evening of music with Tonic Roots, featuring soulful blues, acoustic rock and original repertoire. Meet at the amphitheater near parking lot 4. Program moves to the Sanderling Nature Center if weather is bad.
  • Ink Fish Printing: June 29, 10-11 a.m. “Gyotaku” (guy-yo-tah-koo) or ink fish printing was originally a method of counting how many fish a fisherperson caught. Try your hand at this ancient artform with help from volunteers. Paper, bandanas and all supplies will be available; take a T-shirt if you would like to print one. All ages welcome. Meet at the Park Bathhouse near parking lot P6.
  • Geocaching 101+: June 29, 2-4 p.m. Try an approach to geocaching using smart phones to find caches already located within Kohler-Andrae. Participants must be present at the start to participate. Download the Geocaching app before going to the park for the most fun. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the amphitheater near parking lot 4.
  • Universe in the Park: June 29, 8:30-10 p.m. Join Theodore Peña and Allison Erena for a 30- to 40-minute talk and presentation about astronomy. Learn about current and upcoming celestial events and research; then, weather permitting, view the sky through a telescope. Best for ages 8 and older. Meet at the Sanderling Nature Center, parking lot P3.

St. Nicholas nurse earns HSHS Nurse of the Year Award

Tara Gruenloh, RN, BSN, of HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan – Women and Infants Center, has earned a Hospital Sisters Health System 2023 Nurse of the Year Award.

Nurse of the Year Award recipients are honored for demonstrating passion, quality and excellence in nursing and carrying out the core values of HSHS: Respect, Care, Competence and Joy. They are nominated by nursing colleagues and chosen by nursing leadership and the hospitals’ Professional Nurse Practice Council.

Gruenloh said in a news release: “I am passionate about treating every mother and baby with dignity and respect, regardless of their backgrounds, beliefs or circ*mstances. I take pride in maintaining a calm and compassionate demeanor, even in challenging and high stress situations.”

Howards Grove valedictorian earns Land of the Free Scholarship

Olivia Baierl of Howards Grove High School has earned the second Land of the Free Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to the child or grandchild of a military veteran and covers $2,000 total — $1,000 in year one and $1,000 in year two. It is sponsored by Kiel Area Military Appreciation Inc., a 501(c)(3), and is open to Kiel, New Holstein, Elkhart Lake and Howards Grove school districts.

Baierl was involved in volleyball as a three-year letterman, team captain senior year and state champion for three years. Academically, she was valedictorian of her class and earned high honor roll all four years. She also participated in Badger Girls State; founded and was president of the high school’s Mental Health Club; was a volunteer for Special Olympics, Salvation Army and the Humane Society; and was a caregiver for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She is the daughter of Keith and Julie Baierl and plans to attend Illinois State University.
