It’s been four months now since I got laid off from Qurate Retail Group.I’m fortunate, in a sense. I don’t have to worry about finances for a while yet, and I’m keeping busy-ish – I’ve got a few music projects I’m working on, the animal shelter I volunteer at is in the middle of its busy season, and I still have a big pile of Legend of Zelda games to work through. (Tears of the Kingdom sure did get released at a convenient time.)On the other hand, a lot of other big things have happened outside of my job search. None of them have been good. These last four months would have been difficult if I was employed, and being unemployed has only made them more so.My resume is getting me interviews, at least. (The posts where job hunters share their batting averages are… sobering.) It does seem like the internal communications job market is slowing down for the summer. My last job search, in a white-hot market, took me a little over six weeks. Now, every round of layoffs probably translates to an average of two or three more people fighting for the same jobs that I am. There have been a lot of layoffs. The odds are tough. If you’re in the same boat: I know that words on a screen don’t mean much, but I’m sorry it happened to you. There’s no advice or words of encouragement I can give that you haven’t read a billion times. We do our blocking and tackling and hope like hell that it’s enough. If there’s anything I can do, or if you need someone to talk to about anything (even Legend of Zelda games,) send me a message or a connection request. If you’re hiring in the Philadelphia/New York metro areas or for remote positions: I’m here to find new ways to engage your employees, manage business-critical internal communications projects, and chew bubble gum – and I’m all out of bubble gum. I’ve launched an employee podcast and doubled newsletter clickthrough rates at one Fortune 500 company, and I’ve managed comms for successful company-wide technology rollouts and enlisted over 90 employees to share company-provided LinkedIn content at another. I’ve created content spanning email blasts, intranet articles, digital signage, and social media pages. If you have executives who need comms support, I’ve run town halls, created video scripts, and ghostwritten articles. If any of that sounds like something you want to have on your team, message me here or send me an email. I’m open to contract work too – part-time or full-time if you don’t mind an active job search going on in the background.I remain #opentowork. Let’s talk about what’s next.

As of today, I’ve been laid off for the second time in 18 months.I’ll keep this short, as it never seems like there's much to say in the aftermath of this sort of thing. Thanks to my coworkers at Qurate Retail Group. If you’re hiring, especially for business services, there are roughly 400 ex-QRG team members starting another job hunt today – sharp, driven people with bills to pay and mouths to feed who will be an asset wherever they go. I’m especially grateful to my teammates in IT Communications for being a joy to work with, day in and day out. (And for giving me an undying love of The Great British Baking Show.) If you’re hiring remotely or in the Philadelphia/New York region and are looking for an #internalcommunications professional who can tell your story, manage your projects, and inspire your employees to take action, my email address is in my profile. I'm #opentowork – let’s talk about what’s next.

As a longtime library lover (seriously, I spent hours in my hometown library growing up,) I'm excited to see that Honeywell is giving $1 million to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library for a Data Visualization Lab in our headquarters city. Congratulations to everyone who made it happen!

As an #internalcomms professional, we're always looking for new ways to tell a story, to answer a question. How about a list of rules? This XKCD strip tells you what your life would be like if you suddenly found yourself 100,000 times taller - by giving you a list of safety rules you'd have to follow. (Watch out for low-flying meteors!)A fraction of the language and real estate of a written article. Exponentially greater impact.https://xkcd.com/2412/

If you're in the communications business, take a few minutes to check out this year's Edelman Trust Barometer - the pandemic has had a huge impact on public trust in institutions. (If you're in a hurry, page 6 is the Cliff's Notes version.)https://lnkd.in/d4AMdWc

I was reading some of Alexandria Bellivan, M.S.'s posts when I started thinking:How can people from #entertainment, nonprofit, and other non-corporate backgrounds (like me!) learn more about the business world?✅ Here's what’s worked for me:Your hobbies are possible, at least in part, because of a business - one that you may not know much about at all.So, follow those businesses and sectors. (Hint: The secret code words are "supply chain," “acquisition,” and "investment".)🎥 Are you a Netflix fan? Understand what it means for the entertainment industry when a subscription platform brings more aspects of content creation, production, and distribution in-house.🎭 Broadway fanatic? Learn who invested in your favorite shows, who owns and rents out the theaters, and which shows are recouping their investments. (Only after I left show biz did I truly realize that Broadway is just Silicon Valley with more singing and dancing.)🎮 I’m a video game nerd – that’s a multi-billion dollar business. Where are consoles made? Who makes and publishes games to what platforms? The corporate world can be intimidating – so learn from material that interests you.
